Our Team

Michelle Snyder, Owner/Stylist

Michelle’s skill and vision are in demand across the country. But the first recipient of the San Francisco native’s coveted cuts was her little sister, whose hair a 12-year-old Michelle would practice on, having already bobbed every Barbie in the house. Their mom, a stylist herself in the 1960s, was Michelle’s first inspiration to pursue a career in hair and her first teacher.

Her professional training began under the tutelage of Marcy Harmon at the beloved San Francisco salon Cowboys and Angels, where she was schooled in both classic Vidal Sassoon technique and modern razor-cutting. Michelle continued learning advanced cutting and styling techniques at Bumble and bumble in New York. She cemented her success as a stylist there as she built a steady clientele of celebrities and began working for magazines.

Michelle’s celebrity clients include Amanda Peet, Zooey Deschanel, Karen Elson, Emily Mortimer, Sienna Miller and Zoe Kravitz. Her work has appeared in Dazed & Confused, Vogue, Nylon, Elle, Lula and Oyster magazines. Michelle is also the lead stylist for the celebrated Vaudevillian-style cabaret performers The Citizens Band.

Deriving inspiration from old movies, her peers, and a host of icons such as Louise Brooks, Jane Birkin, Veruschka von Lehndorff and Linda Evangelista, Michelle is making an indelible mark on the hair world.

Marcy Harmon, Colorist/Stylist

Marcy possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of trends past and present, yet has no patience for arbitrary rules in personal expression. She has styled celebrities such as Gisele, Zooey Deschanel, Katy Perry, Rooney Mara, Lily Allen, Florence Welsh (of Florence and the Machine), Laurie Holden (Walking Dead), Hayley Williams, Kylie Minogue, CL (Korean pop star), Mia Wasikowska, Blake Griffin (of the L.A. Clippers), and more. He apprenticed at the formidable Cowboys and Angels salon, and has since worked alongside some of San Francisco's top colorists and stylists. Michael has invested his time and knowledge in training a number of apprentices who have gone on to successful careers in the industry. He is educated in countless product lines, including Wella hair color, Redken, Bumble and Bumble, and Vidal Sassoon. He has cultivated a diverse and loyal following over the last twenty years. Michael welcomes new and familiar faces with equal enthusiasm, and continues to love living and working in San Francisco.

Dakota Jernigan, Colorist

Dakota’s fascination with hair started at a very young age when she got her hands on her mother’s mannequin heads from her time at cosmetology school. She continued honing her skills on her mother’s hair throughout childhood, as well as her own and any willing participant.

Dakota is very inspired by color in every sense of the word, pulling inspiration from organic tones found in nature to vintage and antique photographs, clothing, and art.

Dakota coins herself as an intuitive balayage hair painter, tailoring each paint to her client, ensuring that it’s unique to each individual. Consistency, softness, and natural color are her main focus. She loves knowing each balayage she paints exists for only a time, never to be replicated, but to change naturally with the help of sunlight and haircutting. She’s always anticipating the next paint to morph into something beautifully different than the last.

Dakota refined her skills for hair color while studying under Bekie Raynard, Eileen McCarthy, Marcy Harmon, and Ashley Rourke. While building her passion for color at Barrow she also had the opportunity to polish her styling skills with the guidance of Michelle Snyder.

Lizzy McNeill, Colorist/Stylist

Lizzy has been a highly sought after stylist in San Francisco for 20 years, offering both color and cutting services. She started her career in Southern California where she mastered the art of blonde. She then moved to San Francisco where she expanded her talents and quickly made a splash, becoming the managing stylist at a busy Hayes valley salon, developing a successful education program, and being featured by San Francisco Magazine as Best of the Bay Hairstylist. Her dedication to professional growth and love for travel have taken her to destinations like New York, London, and South Africa to further her own training. Lizzy truly connects with her clients and has a knack for interweaving her love of art and beauty with her craft. She prides herself on being a true daymaker.

Michael Forrey, Stylist

Michael Forrey has worked as a haircutter, educator, and editorial stylist since 1999. He began his career with Vidal Sassoon in Los Angeles and later ran the Sassoon Academy in San Francisco for over 6 years, teaching precision cutting technique to many West Coast stylists. Michael took a brief leave from the company to share his skills teaching in Berlin while working with artists such as Planning to Rock and Bruce La Bruce. In Europe, he explored his love of styling hair in the fashion world assisting editorial stylists Ramona Eschbach and Holli Smith.

Wanting to share what he learned abroad, Michael rejoined Vidal Sassoon In New York City as Creative Director of the downtown Sassoon salon. In his role he launched the NYC Sassoon Academy, built a large clientele, and was the lead stylist for NYC Fashion Week for contemporary labels that include Eckhaus Latta, Three as Four, Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Vfiles, and Kim Chiu, to name a few. His editorial work appears in magazines including VogueInstyleWonderland Magazine and Papermag

Back in California, Michael now splits his time working in Beverley Hills at STRIIIKE salon and at Barrow, where he has incorporated razor cutting techniques into his hair design.  He continues to work internationally as a freelance educator and editorial stylist, and is thrilled to be apart of the Barrow team.

Inspired by creative cross-fertilization between the worlds of fashion, art, and music, Michael draws on his strong technical foundation, deconstructing classic shapes to create a more modern, undone, and effortless look. Michael believes that the key to a great cut is suitability and he works with each client to create a look for their individual face shape, lifestyle and hair texture.

Jackie completed an extensive two year apprenticeship under owner and renowned stylist Michelle Snyder, training in cutting edge techniques of Sassoon and Bumble & Bumble, and became an expert in the signature Barrow techniques. Her attention to detail and eye for flattering shapes allows her to manifest beautiful styles while tailoring to each individual’s needs. She finds inspiration from 90’s aesthetic, bobs, and the beauty of risk-taking.

Myles Ashman, Stylist

Growing up in Southern California in the 80’s & 90’s Myles was influenced by the effortless, salt-filled hair happening around skate and surf culture, and the chaotic energy of punk. He has called San Francisco home for over 25 years.

While always passionate about hair and fashion, Myles started his cutting career at Barrow, training under Michelle Snyder, Marcy Harmon, Michael Forrey, Alx Nixon and Corinna Hernandez. He is inspired by deconstructed shapes and precision cuts, with a special love for working with curly and textured hair, and utilizes both advanced razor techniques and shears to create striking styles.

Eileen McCarthy, Colorist

Listed as one of Allure’s and 7x7’s Best of San Francisco for her beautiful color work, Eileen has spent the last 8 years at Barrow Salon as a colorist and color educator.
